Pirates Claim Chris Jakubauskas Off Waivers from Seattle

The Pittsburgh Pirates today announced they have claimed right-handed pitcher Chris Jakubauskas off waivers from the Seattle Mariners. To make room on the 40-man roster, right-handed pitcher Jeff Karstens has been designated for assignment. The announcement was made by Pirates Senior Vice President, General Manager Neal Huntington.

The 30-year-old Jakubauskas spent a majority of the 2009 season with the Mariners and went 6-7 with a 5.32 ERA in 35 games (eight starts). He finished third on the Seattle pitching staff with 93.0 innings pitched and third in victories. Jakubauskas made two relief appearances to start the season before making eight straight starts from April 16 through May 25. He picked up his first Major League win in his second outing on April 10 at Oakland and in his third big league start on April 28, he gave up just two hits while throwing an 8.0-inning complete game against the White Sox in Chicago (he suffered a 2-1 loss in the contest).

Prior to signing with Seattle on June 13, 2007, Jakubauskas played four seasons of independent baseball. He spent the 2007 season pitching with West Tennessee (AA) before pitching at three different levels in the Seattle minor league sys- tem in 2008.
