The following is from Calgaryvipers.com The Calgary Vipers used three homeruns to defeat the Orange County Flyers 6-5 in Game One of the Golden Baseball League's Championship Series at Foothills Stadium in Calgary, Alberta. The Vipers fell behind early 3-0 and 5-3 but a two run homerun by Carlos Duncan in the bottom of the fifth inning put the Snakes ahead for good. From there reliever Jon Huizinga took over as he went two and two third innings without walking a batter or giving up a run while striking out five. With the win Calgary takes a 1-0 lead in the best of five series.
Orange County quickly took the lead in the top of the first inning as Mark Okano walked, David Bacani was hit by a pitch, Jermy Acey reached on a fielder's choice, and Brian Rios clubbed a three run homerun for the 3-0 advantage.
In the bottom of the second inning Felix Jose walked, Drew Miller singled, and Kit Pellow hit a three run homerun of his own to tie the game at 3-3.
The Flyers went back out in front in the top of the fourth inning with a Fernando Pacheco walk and a Terry Mermer two run shot for the 5-3 lead.
Richard Austin brought the Vipers within a run with a solo homerun in the bottom of the fourth for the 5-4 score.
The homeruns continued in the bottom of the fifth as Colin Moro walked and Carlos Duncan smacked a two run long ball to give Calgary their first lead at 6-5.
Joe Sergent (2-0) recorded the victory in the game going five and a third innings and striking out six batters. Mac Suzuki (1) picked up the save in tossing a nail-biting ninth inning where he walked two but got a strikeout and ground out to end the game. Matt Durkin (0-2) was saddled with the loss in giving up six runs in five innings.
Game Two of the GBL's Championship series is Wednesday September 10th at 7:05 PM (MDT) in Calgary at Foothills Stadium. Game Three will be played at Mazmanian Field at 8:05 PM (MDT) on the Campus of Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut which is ten minutes from where Orange County usually plays at Cal State Fullerton. The reason for the change in location is a concert being played at Goodwin Field on Friday night. If necessary, Games Four and Five will be played at Goodwin Field in Fullerton, California on Saturday September 13th at 8:05 PM (MDT) and Sunday September 14th at 7:05 PM (MDT).
