Game Recap for 06/17/2008 7:05 PM

What started out as a pitcher's duel quickly turned into an offensive explosion as the Orange County Flyers (14-5) held on to beat the Yuma Scorpions(11-11) 11-10 Tuesday night at Goodwin Field in Fullerton, CA.

Brian Rios led the way for the Flyers going 2-3 with a pair of RBI while Mark Okano added a two run homer to give him his league leading 10th homer of the season.

Jeremy Zick gave a solid outing leaving in the Flyers up by six before things got interesting.

Zick (2-0) picked up the win after giving six strong innings giving up just two runs before turning things over to the bullpen.

Jeremy Zick got off to a rough start for the Flyers, walking the first two batters of the game before Maikel Jova and Jose Rodriguez drove in runs for Yuma.

Orange County answered back in the bottom of the inning when Brian Rios shot a two run double down the third base line to tie the game up.

The Flyers put up two more runs in the third as David Bacani continued his hot hitting with a single to start things off. Jermy Acey followed suit and then stole second to setup runners on second and third with no outs.

A wild pitch scored Bacani before Breen drove in Acey to put the Flyers up two.

Mark Okano continued to flex his power in the fourth blasting his league leading tenth homer over the center field fence, a two run shot, putting Orange County up by four.

Jeff LaRue added an RBI single in the fifth to left center field scoring Brian Rios.

Jeff Van Houten doubled to start the sixth before eventually scoring on a Bacani sacrifice fly.

Yuma was able to make things interesting in the seventh as Pete Farina and Ryan Barba singled with out in front of back to back doubles from Rich Janeway and Henry Calderon doubled, pushing across three runs.

The Scorpions used a pair of walks to load the bases, still with just one out, when Jose Rodriguez delivered a sacrifice fly to deep right field, scoring Calderon

But Eric Sheridan was able to get out of the jam, striking out A.J. Valentine with the tieing run on second to end the threat.

The Flyers went back in the offensive in the bottom of the inning, as reliever James Garcia got into trouble. After issuing a walk to Rios to start the inning, Garcia surrendered to LaRue before Fernando Pacheco pushed the lead back to five with a two RBI double.

Pacheco later scored on Jeffery Van Houten's single into right field.

The Scorpions would rally again in the eighth against Sheridan, Pete Farina continued an excellent season against his former team with a double. Rich Janeway followed with an RBI single but was caught stealing third on an excellent throw by the catcher Josh Arhart.

Yuma was able to take advantage of poor Orange County defense as a misplayed ball in center field extended the inning backed by an error at short, pushing across another four runs for the second consecutive inning to pull within one.

The Scorpions were able to get the tieing run on base with two outs in the ninth, but Ezequiel Ruvelcaba shut the door to pick up his second save of the year.

Mike Esposito was handed the loss (2-2).

These two teams will meet again Wednesday night at Goodwin Field for Game two of the three game series.
