FLYERS SHUT OUT CIMARRONES IN GAME 1
Orange County pulling closer to first-place Maui

Box Score

YUMA, Ariz. (July 28, 2010) – The Orange County Flyers earned their first shut out win of the season over the Tijuana Cimarrones, 3-0, at the Ray Kroc Baseball Complex in Yuma, Arizona, on Wednesday.  The game, which was played in Yuma because of incomplete stadium repairs at Tijuana’s Cerro Colorado Stadia, lasted seven innings as the first game of a doubleheader.

The Flyers (7-3 second half, 29-26 overall) are no games back of first-place Maui (5-1), but are listed in second in the GBL South Division because of a lower winning percentage so far in the second half.

OC starter Kevin Altman pitched six innings, scattering six hits and a walk, and the Flyers defense turned a season-high three double-plays to keep the Cimarrones (0-7, 6-46) scoreless.  Altman (4-3) won his third game in his last four starts, lowering his ERA to 3.94 before turning the ball over to closer Andre Simpson, who pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning for the save (11), his seventh of the month.

Altman added his first extra-base hit of the year, a two-run triple that put Orange County on the board in the fifth inning, to provide the winning runs.  He scored one batter later on center fielder Steve Boggs' sacrifice fly.

The game was played in 1:53 as the second game of the three-game series.  Orange County will finish the series with the second game of the doubleheader this evening, and the team is off Thursday before facing the Edmonton Capitals for three games at home over the weekend.
