The Orange County Flyers stifled the Calgary Vipers offense to take the second game of the three game series, 6-3. An offensively charged bottom of the first inning, highlighted by four straight hits and three runs helped the Flyers (18-20) defeat the Vipers (20-20). The Flyers led off the bottom of the first with four consecutive hits by Steve Boggs, Derek Perren, Jimmy Rohan, and Keith Ginter, with a two-run double by Rohan, recently chosen Golden Baseball League All-Star, and an RBI single by Ginter gave the Flyers an early 3-0 lead. The Flyers would scatter three more runs throughout the game, Tyler Keeble’s RBI single in the bottom of the fourth gave the Flyers a 4-1 lead, while in the bottom of the seventh Ginter, who finished 4-4 with two RBI widened the Flyers lead to 5-1. After giving up two more runs, the Flyers got an insurance run on Perren’s third hit of the game, an RBI single in the bottom of the eighth which gave the Flyers the 6-3 lead. Byung-Hyun Kim picked up his third win of the year, going five innings, and giving up only one run and two hits, while striking out two Vipers. Relievers Jesse Smith, Mike Koons, and closer Andre Simpson came in to finish off the final four innings of the game as the Vipers loss streak reached 12 games, tying a Golden Baseball League record. Orange County goes for the three game sweep over the Vipers tomorrow, then the Tucson Toros come into “The Station” for a two-day three game series starting Friday. |
