VIPERS STRIKE LAST IN BACK-AND-FORTH CONTEST

FULLERTON, Calif. (June 16, 2010) – The Calgary Vipers outlasted Orange County in a back-and-forth game, 13-12, at Goodwin Field on Wednesday Night.  The Flyers lost their third straight game to fall to 8-12 on the season.

Calgary took the deciding lead with a three-run eighth inning, highlighted by Luis Taveras’ two-run single to drive in his sixth and seventh runs of the game. 

Orange County overcame a five run deficit with a blitzkrieg eight-run sixth.  After Derek Perren’s RBI double, Jim Goethals blasted the first pitch off reliever Daniel Buller over the left field wall for his second homerun of the game, a three-run shot that tied the game, 8-8.  One batter later, pitcher Kevin Altman drew a walk and came around to score on Jimmy Rohan’s RBI single for the 9-8 lead.  David Harris added an RBI single, and Perren drove in two more on a single for a 12-8 Orange County lead.

After Vipers starter Erik Dessau retired the first seven batters he faced, striking out four in a row at one point, before OC catcher Jim Geothals knocked a solo homerun (3) for an early 1-0 lead in the third inning.  Calgary answered with a Luis Taveras three-run homer to leapfrog in front of the Flyers, 3-1.  Dessau was chased from the game in the big sixth inning, finishing the night

Orange County tied the game, 3-3, with two runs in the home half of the fourth before the Vipers surged ahead off left fielder Drew Miller’s grand slam in the fifth inning for an 8-3 Calgary lead. 

The Flyers continue their first home stand of the year tomorrow at 7:05 pm against the Calgary Vipers.  Two more games are left in the three game series against the Vipers, while the Yuma Scorpions come into Fullerton for a two-game series Friday and Saturday.
