Box Score
EDMONTON, Alberta (June 12, 2010) – Cliff Brumbaugh drove a double off the center field wall to score the winning run from first as the Capitals beat the Flyers, 10-9, in eleven innings at Telus Field late Saturday night.
The Flyers and Capitals played 4:20 on Saturday night in the finale of the 18-game season opening road trip. After Orange County scored the go-ahead run in the top of the 10th inning on a Derek Perren RBI, the Caps answered with an Alex Chavez RBI single to cash Jorge Cortes and tie the game, 9-9. Edmonton nearly won in the 10th, but from left field Sergio Pedroza threw out the game-winning run at the plate.
Orange County tied the game in the top of the ninth with one out. Rookie Zach Mandelblatt’s first professional hit went up the middle to give the Flyers a speedy base runner. Mandelblatt raced from first to third on a Steve Boggs infield single, and Tyler Keeble blooped an 0-2 pitch into left field to cash Mandelblatt and tie the game, 8-8. The Capitals got out of the top of the ninth thanks to an inning-ending double play.
Andre Simpson and the Flyers fielders held the Caps scoreless to force extra innings. Leadoff man Steve Brown flew out to the right field warning track where David Harris made the first out with his back to the wall. Simpson struck out the next batter, and Keeble charged in to pick up a ground ball from just behind the mound and throw to first to beat the runner and end the inning.
The Flyers jumped ahead in the top of the seventh inning. Tyler Keeble made his first hit of the game count, driving a single through the left side of the infield to score two runs to tie the game, and Jimmy Rohan singled home Steve Boggs for a 7-6 lead.
Edmonton answered in the bottom of the seventh when Alex Chavez tripled and Larry Bigbie’s sacrifice fly brought him home to tie the game, 7-7. The Caps broke the tie when a dropped fly out allowed the go-ahead run to score on the first Flyers error of the game.
