Game Recap for 06/09/2009 7:05pm PM

FULLERTON, Calif---Despite members from last season's championship squad in the opposing dugout and bleachers, the Orange County Flyers (3-9) defended their home turf in their home opener, knocking off the Victoria Seals (6-11) and former coaches Darrel Evans and DiPace 4-2 Tuesday night at Goodwin Field.

Second Basemen Nick Guerra and first basemen Robert Fick each had a home run and pair of RBI as starter Jesse Smith held the Seals in check as manager Phil Nevin picked up a win in his return to Goodwin Field.

The Flyers started hot and ended with a bang in the two run victory.

Damian Jackson led of the O.C. first with a single and promptly stole second. The next batter, Nick Guerra, singled up the middle to score Jackson. The next batter was Robert Fick who belted a ball into the right center field gap to plate Guerra and give the Flyers a two run lead.

Flyers starter Jesse Smith (2-2) was solid, keeping Victoria quiet for the first two until the Seals took advantage of a few Orange County mistakes. With runners on first and second in the third with one out, Sergio Pedroza grounded a ball that was misplayed at third base, scoring Bret LeVier from second. Then with runners on the corners, Brian Rios grounded another ball that appeared to be a double play but the Flyers could not turn it to get out of the inning, scoring the tying run.

Orange County appeared to have the solution to break the tie in the fifth with runners on first and second without any outs, but Seals starter Eduardo Baeza (1-3) made a diving catch on Damian Jackson's bunt attempt and doubled up the runner on second who was moving on the pitch.

The Flyers showed their defensive prowess in the next inning as Travis Becktel caught a ball in left center and doubled up the greedy Victoria runner who touched second before trying to get back to first but was unable to with Becktel's perfect throw to first.

Nick Guerra then led of the bottom of the sixth with a homer to right center and on the very next pitch, Robert Fick deposited a home run in a similar location to give the Flyers a 4-2 lead.

The O.C. bullpen took over from there, as Smith exited after 6.1 innings. Andre Simpson escaped a bases loaded jam in the seventh before shutting down Victoria in the eighth.

Bryan Harris pitched a perfect ninth for his second save of the year.

The two teams will finish the three games in two days series on Wednesday with a doubleheader starting at 5:05 p.m.
