FLYERS COME UP SHY IN THE NINTH Box Score Trailing 3-0 in the top of the eighth, David Harris and Steve Boggs led of the inning with hits off reliever Brian Oliver. Jimmy Rohan reached on a fielders choice that scored Harris, and then stole second. One batter later, Ben Johnson singled to bring home Rohan and bring the Flyers within one run, 3-2. Julian Benavidez led off the ninth with a double, and Tyler Keeble sacrificed him to third base, but the Flyers couldn’t bring him home to tie the game. Vipers starter Dusty Gober gave up just one hit through six and 1/3 scoreless innings in his second start of the year. The Vipers struck first in the third inning when Jorge Mejia singled to get on base. Two batters later, Julio Ramirez singled him home for a 1-0 lead. In the fifth, Guillemo Reyes crossed the plate on a Matt Edgecombe ground out for a 2-0 Calgary lead. Calgary got what would be the winning run in the seventh inning, when Ramirez singled to bring home Reyes for his second RBI of the game. Flyers starter Jesse Smith pitched effectively in a losing effort, giving up two runs on seven hits in six innings of work. Smith (1-1) struck out four while walking three. |
