BENAVIDEZ BREAK BACK ONTO SCENE IN ROUT OF TIJUANA First baseman leads Flyers with four hits, three RBI, four runs scored Box Score
YUMA, Ariz. (July 28, 2010) – After missing nearly a month of the season on the inactive list with an injury, first baseman Julian Benavidez made it clear he was back on Wednesday night as the Orange County Flyers trounced the Tijuana Cimarrones, 19-2. Benavidez led all Flyers going 4-for-4 with a game-high three RBI and four runs scored to lead OC over the Rams at Yuma’s Ray Kroc Baseball Complex in the second game of a doubleheader.
The Flyers (8-3 second half, 30-26 overall) have won their last six games while the Cimarrones have extended their GBL-record skid to 18 losses.
Benavidez led a hit-parade that featured five other Flyers – Jimmy Rohan, Tyler Keeble, Alex Jamieson, Eric Pringle and David Harris – with multi-RBI performances. Sergio Pedroza also crossed the plate four times in the blowout.
Jake Renshaw earned the win for Orange County, tossing two scoreless innings with three strike outs. Reshaw combined with relievers Mike Koons and Bryan Harris to keep Tijuana off the scoreboard after the Cimarrones took their only lead of the three-game series, a 2-1 advantage after the second inning. The Flyers got back in front on a Benavidez two-run single and never looked back.
Former Major Leaguer Cha-Seung Baek made the start for Orange County, allowing two runs off three hits while striking out five Cimarrones over three innings of work. The Cimarrones used six different pitches who combined to walk 11 Flyers over the seven-inning game.
Orange County is off Thursday before facing the Edmonton Capitals for three games at home on Friday (6:05pm) and a doubleheader Saturday (5:05pm). Tickets are available by calling the Flyers office at (714) 526-8326 or visiting www.OrangeCountyFlyers.com.

FLYERS SHUT OUT CIMARRONES IN GAME 1 Orange County pulling closer to first-place Maui Box Score
YUMA, Ariz. (July 28, 2010) – The Orange County Flyers earned their first shut out win of the season over the Tijuana Cimarrones, 3-0, at the Ray Kroc Baseball Complex in Yuma, Arizona, on Wednesday. The game, which was played in Yuma because of incomplete stadium repairs at Tijuana’s Cerro Colorado Stadia, lasted seven innings as the first game of a doubleheader.
The Flyers (7-3 second half, 29-26 overall) are no games back of first-place Maui (5-1), but are listed in second in the GBL South Division because of a lower winning percentage so far in the second half.
OC starter Kevin Altman pitched six innings, scattering six hits and a walk, and the Flyers defense turned a season-high three double-plays to keep the Cimarrones (0-7, 6-46) scoreless. Altman (4-3) won his third game in his last four starts, lowering his ERA to 3.94 before turning the ball over to closer Andre Simpson, who pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning for the save (11), his seventh of the month.
Altman added his first extra-base hit of the year, a two-run triple that put Orange County on the board in the fifth inning, to provide the winning runs. He scored one batter later on center fielder Steve Boggs' sacrifice fly.
The game was played in 1:53 as the second game of the three-game series. Orange County will finish the series with the second game of the doubleheader this evening, and the team is off Thursday before facing the Edmonton Capitals for three games at home over the weekend.

SMITH STRIKES OUT 8 AS FLYERS SWEEP OUTLAWS David Harris’ two-run double in sixth inning provides winning runs Box Score
CHICO, Calif. (July 25, 2010) – The Orange County Flyers became the first team to sweep the Chico Outlaws with their third come-from-behind win of the three-game series, 3-2, at Nettleton Stadium on Sunday night. The Flyers improved to 5-3 in the second half and 27-26 overall, the first time the club was over .500 since June 6.
Starting pitcher Jesse Smith led the way with eight strike outs over eight innings of work, his longest outing of the year, allowing two runs on seven hits for his third win of the season. Smith (3-3) turned the ball over to closer Andre Simpson for a 1-2-3 ninth inning and the save (10).
David Harris led the offense with a hand in all three Flyers runs, going 3-for-4 with two RBI and run scored.
Chico struck in the first inning when J.J. Sherrill singled and stole second base. Maikel Jova doubled him home for the early 1-0 Outlaws advantage.
Harris led off the fifth inning with a single for Orange County, and stole second base. After advancing to third on a Tyler Keeble ground out, Harris scored on Alex Jamieson’s RBI ground ball – Jamieson’s fourth RBI of the three-game series – that second baseman Anthony Manual overran for an error.
The Flyers extended their lead in the sixth. Steve Boggs began the inning with a single and Derek Perren walked to follow. After the next two batters were retired, Keith Ginter drew a walk to load the bases. Harris popped a ball into center field, but Mitch Einertson couldn’t locate it until the ball was dropping in front of him for a two-run double to give the Flyers a 3-1 lead.
Smith limited the Outlaws after the 1-run first inning, facing the minimum three batters in four of his next five innings of work. Smith allowed a pair of two-out singles in the seventh, but got a ground ball off the bat of Pasqual Del Real to get out of the inning.
Smith got into trouble in the eighth inning after a lead-off error allowed pinch-hitter Bobby Hill to reach base. Two batters later, Anthony Manuel singled to put runners on first and second. A J.J. Sherrill fielders choice left runners on the corners with two outs, and Maikel Jova singled home a run to pull Chico within one, 3-2. Smith struck out former big leaguer Mike Rose to get out of the eighth with the tying run in scoring position.
The Flyers are off Monday before heading to Yuma for three games against the Tijuana Cimarrones at the Ray Kroc Baseball Complex. The teams will play Tuesday night at 7:00pm and a doubleheader on Wednesday beginning at 6:00pm. According to the league office, Tijuana is hosting games in Yuma until the Cimarrones complete stadium repairs at their home facility.

FLYERS KILL TOMBSTONE PROMOTION WITH COMEBACK WIN Box Score
CHICO, Calif. (July 24, 2010) – The Orange County Flyers spoiled tonight’s “tombstone giveaway” in Chico with a come-from-behind 7-4 win at Nettleton Stadium, invalidating the 500 foam headstone with “R.I.P. Orange County Flyers – July 24, 2010” distributed to the crowd. The Flyers improved to 4-3 in the second half of the GBL season, 26-26 overall, and clinched a series win over the Outlaws for the first time this year.
The Flyers, who taped one of the tombstones to the wall of the clubhouse before the game, leapfrogged the Outlaws with a four-run eighth inning off reliever Josh Dew. Jimmy Rohan walked to lead off the inning, and Sergio Pedroza and Keith Ginter singled to load the bases. David Harris singled to tie the game, 4-4, but Pedroza was thrown out at the plate trying to push the go-ahead run across. Two batters later, Alex Jamieson doubled down the first base line, scoring Ginter and Harris for a 6-4 lead. Derek Perren added a pinch-hit RBI-single to cash Jamieson and put the Flyers up, 7-4.
Orange County started hotter than the 97-degree temperature at first pitch, with the first four batters all hitting safely for three Flyers runs. Steve Boggs and Tyler Keeble singled to get on base. Jimmy Rohan added an RBI-double, and Sergio Pedroza followed suit with a two-run double for a 3-0 lead.
Chico answered on Mike Rose’s two-out bloop single in the bottom of the first to score Anthony Manuel, but Matt Durkin limited the damage by striking out Carlos Lopez with the bases loaded to end the inning. Chico got a run back on a ground ball off the bat of pitcher Mark McLemore in the fourth.
Outlaws starter Mark McLemore settled down after a rough first inning, retiring 12 straight batters after a leadoff walk to Alex Jamieson to begin the second inning. McLemore finished the night allowing three runs on five hits, striking out four and walking two.
Flyers starting pitcher Matt Durkin appeared to strain his back during warm up pitches before the fifth inning, and OC replaced him with Jake Renshaw on the mound. J.J. Sherrill homered off Renshaw to begin fifth inning, tying the game 3-3. The Outlaws scored an unearned run on a wild pitch, but Renshaw was able to get out of the inning with three Outlaws left on base.
Mike Koons (3-1) pitched a scoreless seventh inning for the win, despite walking two batters and hitting another to load the bases before getting Mitch Einertson to pop out to leave the bases loaded, the third time the Outlaws left three runners on base. Bryan Harris pitched a 1-2-3 eighth to get the ball to Andre Simpson, who recorded his ninth save of the season.
Orange County finish the three-game series on Sunday with Jesse Smith making the start for the Flyers against Chico’s Kris Honel. First pitch is at 7:05pm.

OCY 000-004-x --- 4-5-1
FULLERTON, Calif. (July 3, 2010) ? For the second straight night, Orange County overcame a three-run deficit to defeat the first place Na Koa Ikaika Maui, 4-3, at Goodwin Field on Saturday in the first game of a doubleheader. Sergio Pedroza?s towering grand slam homerun over the right field foul pole in the sixth inning catapulted the Flyers ahead. Doubleheaders in the GBL comprise two seven-inning games.
Orange County?s offense struggled through the five innings, failing to get a runner in scoring position, as Maui starter Donald Brandt gave up just one run and two walks while striking out eight Flyers. Brandt allowed the first three batters to reach ? with singles by Steve Boggs and Derek Perren, and a walk to Jimmy Rohan ? in the sixth before being replaced by Kent Tsujimoto.
After Tsujimoto retired one batter, Pedroza stepped to the plate and on an 0-2 count sent a moon-shot over the right field fence on a grand slam on which umpires huddled to discuss the original homerun call, but they did not overturn the ruling.
Newly added reliever Brandon Parillo earned the win in his first appearance with Orange County. Parillo (1-0) gave up one run off two hits in working the top of the sixth inning. Andre Simpson pitched a scoreless seventh inning for his sixth save of the year and second in as many days against Ikaika.

CHICO WINS ON ROOKIE WALKOFF HR Del Real plays the role of hero for Outlaws Box Score
CHICO, Calif. (June 29, 2010) – Chico rookie Pascual Del Real led off the bottom of the ninth inning with a walk-off homerun to give the Outlaws a 3-2 win over the Orange County Flyers on Tuesday night. The Outlaws returned the favor three games after Orange County rookie David Harris knocked a walf-off homerun to beat Chico in Orange County on Saturday, June 26.
The Flyers struck first on a Manny Ayala sacrifice fly RBI to cash Sergio Pedroza in the second inning. In the third, Orange County strung together consecutive singles from Jimmy Rohan, Keith Ginter and an RBI base hit from Pedroza for an early 2-0 lead.
Chico answered in the bottom of the third with two outs as a Mike Rose bloop single landed between Flyers in shallow left field to score Mitch Einertson and Bobby Hill tying the game, 2-2.
The defense for both teams came up with plays to limit offensive chances. In the sixth, Flyers third baseman Jimmy Rohan fielded a Del Real drag bunt bare-handed and made the throw to first in time to beat the runner, keeping Chico off the base paths in the inning. OUTLAWS OVERCOME EJECTIONS TO SPLIT DOUBLEHEADER WITH FLYERS
FULLERTON, Calif. (June 26, 2010) - The Orange County Flyers could not complete a valiant comeback against the Golden Baseball League leading Chico Outlaws 3-2 in the second game of a double header. third. Garry Templeton, the former Flyers manager, came out to argue about a balk call that was not made by 1B umpire Billy Van Raaphorst. Templeton, and former major leaguer, Bobby Hill would be ejected in a long argument.

bottom of the seventh to cement the victory for the Outlaws.
The Flyers head to Chico to rematch with the Outlaws June 28th to the 30th, and return home for a three game series against Maui July 2nd and 3rd.

Ayala faced the minimum 21 batters through the first seven innings, taking a no-hitter into the eighth, as Orange County battered the Vipers, 12-4, in the series finale.
In GBL history, two pitchers have thrown no-hitters, both in 7-inning games during doubleheaders, meaning Ayala matched the feat of seven innings without surrendering a hit. Kevin Price took a 1-2 pitch down the left-field line for a double to lead off the eighth inning for the first Calgary hit. Ayala, now 3-0, gave up consecutive doubles before leaving the game to a round of applause from the Vipers fans.
Ayala got plenty of run support, with rookie Tyler Keeble leading the way going 4-for-5 with a pair of triples and a career-high four RBI. Keeble matched a franchise record with two triples in a game, done only once before.
The Flyers (7-6) struck for two runs in the first inning thanks to an RBI-triple from Tyler Keeble, who batted second in the order for the first time this season, and an RBI-double from Jimmy Rohan.
Orange County chased Calgary starter Jay Broughton from the game in the second inning thanks to run-scoring singles from Rohan and Keith Ginter and a wild pitch that brought in Rohan for a 5-0 lead.
In the bottom of the third inning, Ayala walked the lead off man but induced a ground ball for a double-play to wipe the base paths clear of the only runner to reach in the first seven frames. He finished the game with a line of 7 innings pitched, two runs on two hits, one walk and four strikeouts.
The Flyers offense expanded the lead to 12-0 thanks to a seven-run top of the seventh inning, highlighted by an Ayala RBI-single and Keeble’s second triple with the bases loaded.
Andre Simpson finished the game on the mound, giving up a pair of runs on two hits for the Flyers.
Inadvertent homerun call kick-starts Calgary rally Vipers score nine runs over seventh and eighth innings
CALGARY, Alberta (June 5, 2010) – In a game featuring daffy base-running and confusing calls, the Vipers got the best of the Flyers, 15-11, on Saturday night at Foothills Stadium. Orange County fell to 6-6 on the season.
With Orange County leading 10-6 in the bottom of the seventh and runners on first and second, Drew Miller knocked a ball off the outfield wall and umpire Jamie Dambois signaled homerun. One runner scored from second on the play, but Julio Ramirez, the runner on first was tagged out sliding into home, unaware of the inadvertent HR signal, prompting an out signal from home plate ump John Deluca. Vipers manager Morgan Burkhart argued the call, and Ramirez was put back on third, prompting an argument from Flyers manager Paul Abbott leading to his ejection. With runners on second and third now, Kevin Price hit a three-run homerun to tie the game, 10-10, and capture momentum.
Keith Ginter led off the top of the eighth with a double and scored on a Tyler Keeble single to give Orange County the 11-10 advantage. The Vipers struck for five runs in the bottom of the eighth inning, highlighted by a three-run homerun by Julio Ramirez, for a 15-11 lead.
The Flyers broke open a 6-6 ballgame with a three-run sixth inning thanks to crafty cat-and-mouse base running and a two-run sacrifice fly from Ben Johnson. On a Jimmy Rohan ground ball, the Vipers tried to throw home to get the runner Jim Geothals from third. Goethals retreated back to the bag where Steve Boggs was occupying the base. As the Vipers went to tag Goethals, Boggs got off the base and headed back for second base. When Calgary threw to second to tag a runner, Goethals again broke for home, prompting a throw to the plate. In the end, Calgary was unable to tag any runners out, and everyone was safe.
One batter later, Johnson’s sac fly scored two, and Ginter drove in an extra run for the 9-6 lead through six innings.
VIPERS EDGE FLYERS BEHIND DESSAU'S ARM Tying run left in scoring position in ninth for second straight game
CALGARY, Alberta (June 4, 2010) – For the second straight night, Orange County had the tying run in scoring position in the ninth but couldn’t bring him home. Calgary reliever Rene Miniel induced a ground ball from Steve Boggs for the final out of the game, preserving a 3-2 Vipers win over the Flyers.
Orange County trailed, 3-1, going into the ninth inning. Keith Ginter drew a walk to lead off the final frame, and Miniel struck out the next two batters. Ginter advanced to third on Jim Goethalss single to left field, and pinch hitter Sergio Pedroza drove in Ginter with the a single up to the middle on the first pitch he saw, brining the Flyers within one run before Boggs’ ground out.
Calgary starter Erik Dessau gave the Vipers seven strong innings for the win. After giving up a run in the first, he faced the minimum 12 batters through the next four innings. Dessau (2-0) finished the night allowing one run on seven hits while striking out four batters.
The Flyers struck first stringing three hits together in the first inning. Right fielder Ben Johnson’s single scored Jimmy Rohan for the 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the third, Vipers centerfielder Julio Ramirez tied the game with a solo homerun off Brett Smith. In the fourth, the Vipers led off the inning with three hits before pitcher Erik Dessau’s sac fly scored one run, and Guillermo’s RBI single made it 3-1 Calgary.
Orange County had a chance to get back into the game in the eighth inning after back-to-back walks by Calgary reliever Daniel Chaffardet, but Brian Oliver came in to deal a pair of strikeouts to end the inning.
The Flyers continue this five-game series in Calgary on Saturday as former NL All-Star Byung-Hyun Kim takes the mound for the Flyers in his third start of the year. First pitch is at 6:05pm Pacific, and the game can be heard live online through www.OrangeCountyFlyers.com.
CALGARY, Alberta (June 3, 2010) – The Flyers had the tying run at third base with one out in the ninth inning but couldn’t bring him home as Calgary defeated Orange County, 3-2, on Thursday night.
Trailing 3-0 in the top of the eighth, David Harris and Steve Boggs led of the inning with hits off reliever Brian Oliver. Jimmy Rohan reached on a fielders choice that scored Harris, and then stole second. One batter later, Ben Johnson singled to bring home Rohan and bring the Flyers within one run, 3-2.
Julian Benavidez led off the ninth with a double, and Tyler Keeble sacrificed him to third base, but the Flyers couldn’t bring him home to tie the game.
